Details | Our programme covers three half day sessions and will be delivered by Julia Tanner – Consultant, Trainer and Author – Geographical Association Primary Geography Champion (2013-17) Julia Tanner is a former teacher and teacher educator, and now an education consultant. Julia has a national reputation for her work in early years and primary geography and has run numerous workshops and training days for schools, Local Authorities, voluntary organisations, the Geographical Association, Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation and Early Excellence. She has written extensively, making practical classroom focused contributions journals and books. Julia is well-known regionally and nationally for her practical, down-to-earth approach. Session 1 - Developing Geography Provision In Your School Monday 16th October 2023 This session is for new and experienced Geography Subject Leads. The Ofsted Subject Report (September 2023) found that the curriculum in some schools did not match the scope and ambition of the National Curriculum. This session will provide the opportunity to review your school's curriculum in the light of this finding It will focus on the key role of effective subject leadership, and will include: • Essential subject leadership tasks. • Reviewing your geography curriculum plans. • Identifying and supporting CPD needs. • Resourcing primary geography. To make the best use of this session, please bring copies of your long-term plans for geography. This session will include some work outside, so please bring a clipboard and suitable clothing and footwear. Session 2 - Developing Enquiry In Primary Geography Monday 11th March 2024 This session is for all classroom teachers and Geography Subject Leads. The Ofsted Subject Report (September 2023) found that geographical enquiry was underdeveloped in many schools. This session will provide practical support for developing effective enquiry approaches in your school. It will include: • Understanding geographical enquiry as a process. • Identifying appropriate questions to frame and structure an enquiry. • Exploring the full range of sources of information that may be used in completing different types of geographical enquiries. To make the best use of this session, please bring copies of your long-term plans for geography. This session will include some work outside, so please bring a clipboard and suitable clothing and footwear. Remaining session: Session 3 - Developing Fieldwork Skills In Primary Geography Thursday 23rd May 2024 This session is for all classroom teachers and Geography Subject Leads. The Ofsted Subject Report (September 2023) found the fieldwork was underdeveloped in almost all schools, especially in relation to progression. This session will provide the opportunity to review your school's provision for fieldwork in the light of this finding. It will focus on understanding and developing fieldwork as an essential element of the primary geography curriculum. It will cover a wide range of fieldwork strategies, include practical activities to investigate the potential of the school grounds and local area, and explore possibilities for enhancing fieldwork provision in the school’s geography curriculum. It will include. • Examining statutory requirements and progression in fieldwork skills • Auditing the potential of the school grounds and local area for developing children’s fieldwork skills • Identifying opportunities for integrating fieldwork in geography units of work • Valuable resources for developing fieldwork skills To make the best use of this session, please bring copies of your long-term plans for geography.
